The Eagles also take on William & Mary
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The 10th-ranked Boston College field hockey team returns to action with an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup against seventh-ranked North Carolina in Durham, N.C., on Saturday. Both teams are looking for their first conference win.
Â
The Eagles (5-1, 0-1 ACC) are perfect in non-conference action, but fell to then No. 5 Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 8 at home. The Tar Heels (4-1, 0-1 ACC) dropped a 3-1 contest to No. 16 Wake Forest in the first weekend of ACC play.
Â
The game, which is being played on Duke's home field while the Heels' new facility is under construction, is slated for noon and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
Â
BC is 2-14 all-time against UNC with the two wins coming at home: last year in 2016 and in 2008. Sophomore Brigid Wood scored her first career goal in last year's victory while senior Chelcie Mendonca notched the game-winner in the second half.
Â
Before returning to The Heights, the Eagles will travel to Williamsburg, Va., to take on William & Mary. The Tribe are 5-1 with a lone loss coming in the season opener on a 5-0 shutout against then No. 2 Duke. The Eagles will be the second ACC team they face this season and third ranked team. William & Mary beat No. 7 Michigan, 1-0, last Friday.
Â
The Eagles are 2-2 all-time against the Tribe but the two teams have not faced off since a 7-2 BC victory in 2009 at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex. The three other meetings all came in the 1990s. The only time the Eagles traveled to Williamsburg was in 1990 and resulted in a 3-0 loss.
Â
Through the first six games of the 2017 season, the scoring has been spread out among 10 different Eagles. Freshmen Jaime Natale and Elizabeth Warner lead the way with three goals each while classmates Caroline McGovern and Cassidy Atchinson and junior Lucy Lytle all have notched two. Â McGovern has two of the Eagles' five game-winners with Natale, Warner and Lytle have each scored one. Four different BC players have logged two assists each - McGovern, seniors Alesandra Miller and Chelcie Mendonca and junior Ymke Rose Gote. Â In all, 13 of the Eagles' 18 student-athletes who have logged game minutes have recorded at least one point this season.
Â
Sophomore Sarah Dwyer is the Eagle in the cage for Boston College. She recorded a career-high six saves in the double overtime win against Northwestern in the ACC/Big Ten Cup and went on to register her first career shutout in the win against Providence on Sunday. Her 1.68 goals-against average and 15 saves are fifth in the ACC.
