August 31, 2017 | Field Hockey
BC travels to Lancaster with a 2-0 record
Â
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The 12th-ranked Boston College field hockey team travels to Lancaster, Pa., home of USA Field Hockey, for two games against ranked opponents for the ACC/Big Ten Cup. The Eagles (2-0) will take on No. 14 Northwestern (2-1) on Friday and No. 6 Maryland (1-0) on Sunday.
Â
The Eagles are coming off two victories after beating Quinnipiac, 6-1, at home to start 2017. It was the 10th straight season-opening win. They then traveled to Albany to defeat the 18th-ranked Great Danes in double overtime, thanks to a golden goal by freshman Caroline McGovern in the 92nd minute. It marked the eighth time in 10 years BC started the season 2-0 and the first time since 2015.
Â
BC is playing in the rivalry tournament – pitting two of the best field hockey conferences against each other – for the third straight year. The Eagles have faced the Wildcats and Terrapins the last two seasons, going a combined 1-3.
Â
The Eagles have faced Northwestern 10 times all-time with the Wildcats earning nine victories. BC's lone victory came in 2002 in a 1-0, overtime win. Northwestern won both meetings in Lancaster, including last year's 2-1 victory.
Â
BC also has one all-time win over Maryland, a former ACC foe. The Eagles bested the Terps at the ACC/Big Ten Cup in 2015 in a 3-2, overtime victory. They lost, 3-1, last season in Lancaster.
Â
In the young season, the Eagles have outshot opponents, 43-10, and have taken 27 shots on goals to opponents' five. Freshman Jaime Natale leads the way with four points, scoring two goals in the first game of the season. McGovern and junior captain Frederique Haverhals have three points apiece with a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Sarah Dwyer has made three saves on the year with a 0.87 goals-against average.
Â
The Eagles take on Northwestern at the Spooky Nook Sports Facility on Friday at 4 p.m. They will play Maryland on Sunday at 2 p.m. Duke will play the Terps on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Wildcats at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
