Conference coaches slot the Eagles fifth in the stacked Atlantic Division
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team was predicted to finish fifth in the stacked ACC Atlantic Division, the conference announced on Wednesday following a preseason vote of the league's 12 head coaches.
The Eagles finished fifth in the Atlantic Division voting behind Wake Forest, Clemson, Louisville and Syracuse. All four teams are ranked inside the top nine of the Preseason United Soccer Coaches (formerly the NSCAA – National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Poll: Wake Forest (No. 2), Clemson (No. 5), Syracuse (No. 8) and Louisville (No. 9). NC State rounds out the six-team Atlantic Division list.
In the Coastal Division, North Carolina was chosen first, following by Virginia, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Duke and Pitt. Like the Atlantic, the Coastal Division has four teams ranked in the Preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll: North Carolina (No. 4), Notre Dame (No. 10), Virginia (No. 13), Virginia Tech (No. 17).
The ACC coaches predicted North Carolina would win the ACC Championship in November, as the Tar Heels claimed five of the 12 votes. Wake Forest (three votes), Clemson (two votes), Virginia and Notre Dame (one vote apiece) also earned consideration from the league's coaches.
Last year, the Eagles finished the eight-game ACC slate with a 3-3-2 record to place fifth in the Atlantic, one point back of Syracuse (3-2-3). BC then advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Championship, topping Virginia Tech at home in penalties in the first round, before defeating No. 4 North Carolina, 1-0, in the quarterfinals in Chapel Hill. In the semifinals, BC fell at No. 3 Clemson, 1-0, with the Tigers netting the game-winning goal with just 1:28 left in regulation.
Boston College then advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Fordham at home, 1-0, in the first round. In the second round, the Eagles fell to No. 21 Albany, 3-0, on the road to close the season at 9-9-3 overall.
The Eagles formally open the 2017 season next Friday, Aug. 25, when they host Quinnipiac in the season opener. The teams will kick off at 4 p.m. at the Newton Campus Field.
