Q&A with Head Coach Chris Campbell
August 11, 2017 | Volleyball
Coach Campbell answers questions about the upcoming season.
The Boston College women's volleyball team began training camp this week to prepare for the upcoming 2017 campaign. To wrap up the week's practices, head coach Chris Campbell answered a few questions for bceagles.com.
Q: How do you feel training went during the first week back?
A: Good. For returning players, getting a sense of what they've been able to do over the summer and what changes they've made to their game. For the new coming players, just getting a better sense of where they're at, where they can contribute, what are their pieces of the game that we'll be able to use and where we need to add things.
Q: What goals does the team have this season?
A: It's a little tough to set explicit goals when half your team is new, so with seven new, incoming players we're still kind of figuring out who we are right now. That process has got to continue before we set outcome goals. In terms of process goals, we're defining those as we discover the strengths and weaknesses, such as blocking or attacking or defense. Things like that.
Q: How have the newcomers been adjusting?
A: So far, they're doing well. I've been quite happy. They're very open and receptive to what we're teaching. I think the pace is a little different than what they're used to, but it's always different for freshmen.
Q: What strengths have you seen this week?
A: A lot of the offensive stuff we worked on in the spring is starting to come out. Getting a lot more shots and able to move the ball around more. Ball control is starting out better than it usually is at the beginning of training camp. There's still work to be done, but I think we're starting from a good point.
Q: Any standouts during practice during this first week?
A: It's a little early to say yet. There's a lot of enthusiasm at the start of every training camp. You almost have to wait for that to burn off until you get down the core of what game everybody has after the excitement of being back has faded a bit. Then you get a better sense of who's really performing. There are a couple players who look like they've got something they could really show, but I'm waiting to be wowed right now.
Q: What do you see as a challenge for this season's schedule?
A: The ACC is going to be good this year. I think as a conference we were a little bit down from last year, but a lot of that was due to injuries across the board that hurt a lot of teams. The conference schedule is going to be a bear. At the end of the day, it's going to be good. There are probably four or five teams that are legitimately top 25.
