Eagles land a pair on the coaches’ All-America squads
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College sophomores Sam Apuzzo (West Babylon, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Miller (New Canaan, Conn.) have been voted to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's All-America squads, which were announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Apuzzo earned first-team honors, while Miller was a second-team honoree. They represent two of the 11 freshmen or sophomores voted to the All-America squads. Apuzzo is one of two sophomores on the first team, while Miller is one of four underclassmen on the second team. Forty-eight student-athletes were honored on the three IWLCA All-America teams.
Apuzzo enters Saturday's NCAA Quarterfinal game ranked fourth nationally in both points (107) and goals (72), which are also both the program's single-season records. Additionally, her 5.10 points per game are the sixth-most in the country, while her 35 assists rank 32nd in the nation. Earlier this year, Apuzzo earned All-ACC First Team, All-ECAC First Team and IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team honors. She is the first player in program history to score at least 100 points in a single season. Heading into Saturday's Elite Eight game, Apuzzo's 14 points in two NCAA Tournament games lead all players nationally.
Miller is one of the nation's top defenders and has started every game of her collegiate career. This season, she has helped backbone the Eagles' defensive effort in shutting down some of the nation's top scorers, most recently Canisius' Erica Evans (1 assist on May 12 in the NCAA First Round), who came into the game as the nation's leading goal scorer and second in points. Miller leads the squad in caused turnovers (27) and is second in ground balls (37). Additionally, she has collected 38 draw controls this year – third most on the team. Miller was an IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team honoree.
Apuzzo and Miller represent the program's 14th and 15th All-America selections, and mark the eighth straight year the Eagles have claimed at least one IWLCA All-American. This is the fifth time BC has placed at least two players on the IWLCA All-America teams.
Apuzzo, Miller and the 14th-ranked Eagles (15-6) are set to host No. 7 Southern California (18-3) on Saturday, May 20, in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The game is set for 1 p.m. at the Newton Campus Fields, and will be streamed live on ESPN3. The winner of the game will advance to the NCAA Championship Weekend, which will be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., over Memorial Day weekend.
