Pair honored for performances last week
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Tatiana Cortez (softball) and sophomore Gian Martellini (baseball) have been named Eagles of the Week for their performances last week.
Sunday's game was Back the Blue Day, in honor of Cortez's father, Ronny, a 24-year veteran of the Houston Police Department who was shot in the line of duty and is currently in recovery. Down 6-2 in the fifth inning, Cortez hit a two-run home run. With the Eagles behind 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Cortez stepped up an hit a two-run walk-off home run on the day dedicated to her father. Cortez hit .400 this week with two home runs, five RBI, and a 1.000 slugging percentage.

Martellini led the way for the Eagles at the plate in the weekend series against Miami, batting .364 with four hits, four RBIs and seven total bases. He hit a three-run home run - his fifth bomb of the season - in the first inning on Sunday to put BC on top, a lead the Eagles would not relinquish. The catcher was behind the dish for all 27 innings against the Canes and caught two runners stealing. Martellini has recorded a hit in the last eight games, tying for the Eagles' longest hit streak of the season  and setting a career long. He has at least one hit in 33 of the 40 games played.

Softball (29-19, 13-7 ACC) will host Providence on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Notre Dame for a three-game stint at Notre Dame. Baseball (17-24, 7-17 ACC) will travel to Lowell to play the River Hawks on Tuesday at 5 p.m. followed by a three-game series at Wake Forest over the weekend.
