For the second year in a row and third all-time, Boston College associate head coach Greg Brown will be an assistant coach for the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Buffalo
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Greg Brown (Scituate, Mass.), entering his 14th season as a coach at Boston College and sixth as associate head coach, has been named an assistant coach for the 2018 U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y. It marks the second-consecutive year Brown will return to the bench for Team USA as the Red, White and Blue captured its fourth-ever gold medal over Canada in the 2017 thriller.
In fact, the exact same coaching staff will return at the helm of the U.S. National Junior Team.
Bob Motzko (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud State University) will return as head coach for the 2018 U.S. National Junior Team, as announced by USA Hockey exclusively on NHL Network. USA Hockey also announced today that, along with Motzko and Brown, Grant Potulny (Minneapolis, Minn./Northern Michigan University), Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, Pa./Providence College) and Steve Miller (Littleton, Colo./Air Force Academy) will also return.
This marks Brown's third stint as assistant coach of the U.S. National Junior Team after serving with Motzko on the 2014 and 2017 squads. The 2014 U.S. team finished fifth in Malmo, Sweden while the 2017 won gold in Toronto/Montreal
A two-time U.S. Olympian (1988, 1992), Brown enjoyed a 12-year professional hockey career that included stops with the NHL's Buffalo Sabres (1990-91, 1992-93), Pittsburgh Penguins (1993-94) and Winnipeg Jets (1994-95) in addition to playing eight seasons overseas in Germany, Sweden and Switzerland.
The 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship is set for Buffalo, New York, from Dec. 26, 2017 - Jan. 5, 2018, and will include the first ever outdoor game in tournament play when the United States takes on Canada at New Era Field on Dec. 29.
NOTES:
• NHL Network is the exclusive television home of the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in the United States
• Jim Johannson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), USA Hockey's assistant executive director of hockey operations, is serving as the general manager of Team USA for the ninth consecutive year
• Approximately 40 players will attend the 2017 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan, this August. Invitees to the camp will be announced in the coming months.
