Burt, Lonergan, Keller receive the final Hockey East weekly awards of the season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After the No. 4 seed Boston College women's hockey team fell to No. 1 Wisconsin, 1-0, in the national semifinal in St. Charles, Mo., on Friday night, three Eagles were recognized by Hockey East with the final weekly awards of the 2016-17 season.
Junior goaltender Katie Burt was tabbed the Warrior Player of the Week, junior All-America defenseman Megan Keller was the Defensive Player of the Week and freshman forward Caitrin Lonergan was the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.
Burt played one of the best games in her career on Friday, making 35 saves against the nation's top offense. That figure was one shy of her career high, and helped keep the Eagles tied with the Badgers at 0-0 until the final minute of play as UW out-shot BC 19-7 in the second period and 11-3 in the third. Burt also backed BC's penalty-kill unit as Wisconsin posted 10 shots without a goal in four man-advantage opportunities.
Keller also posted a stand-out performance as the Eagles rotated only four defensemen in the contest and held Wisconsin off the board for more than 59 minutes.
Lonergan had one of the Eagles' top chances in the game in the second period, darting down the wing and cutting in front across Patty Kazmaier Award-winning goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens for a prime chance. Her line also combined for six shots, while she was 8-for-12 in the faceoff circle, the best percentage in the game among regular centers.
The Eagles concluded the 2016-17 season with a 28-6-5 record, the team's third-best record ever, while advancing to its seven Frozen Four in program history. BC repeated as Hockey East regular-season, Hockey East Tournament and Beanpot champions, marking just the second time in program history the team won all three trophies in one season.
