Eagles’ sophomore shared the national lead in scoring last week while the freshman notched two game-deciding goals
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College sophomore forward Makenna Newkirk and freshman forward Caitrin Lonergan were recognized by Hockey East with two of the conference's weekly awards on Monday.
After factoring in six of the Eagles' seven goals last week, Newkirk drew Warrior Player of the Week honors. Lonergan, who tallied the Eagles' two game-deciding goals last week as part of her three points, was the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.
In last Tuesday's Beanpot first-round game against Boston University, Newkirk was involved in all three BC goals. She took a Lonergan set-up and staked the Eagles to a 1-0 lead less than 2:00 into the game. Then after the team fell behind 2-1 after two periods, she tallied the game-tying goal midway through the third period. With less than 3:00 to play, Newkirk set up Lonergan's game-winning goal to send the Eagles to their fifth-straight final this week.
On Friday, Newkirk again collected three points, scoring one goal and adding two assists in BC's 4-4 tie with Connecticut after twice battling back from three-goal deficits. She set up Megan Keller's goal in the second period that got the Eagles' on the board, and then scored the team's next goal to pull BC within two goals at 4-2. After Boston College went into the third period trailing by a single goal at 4-3, she set up Lonergan again for what proved to be the game-tying goal for the final 4-4 score.
With Friday's tie, the Eagles outright claimed the 2016-17 Hockey East regular-season title – the team's fourth-straight regular-season crown.
These are the Eagles' 12th and 13th weekly awards from Hockey East this season. This is Newkirk's first weekly honor of the season after she was January's co-Player of the Month. This is Lonergan's third weekly honor to go with her October and November Rookie of the Month awards.
Sixth-ranked Boston College (20-3-5, 15-2-3 HEA) returns to the ice on Tuesday, February 7, when the team brings its 16-game undefeated streak into the Beanpot championship game against Northeastern. Faceoff at the Huskies' Matthews Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
