Eagles take two weekly honors from Hockey East after a 2-1 week that included the Beanpot title
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College junior All-America defenseman Megan Keller and redshirt freshman forward/defenseman Erin Connolly were recognized by Hockey East with two of the conference's weekly awards on Monday.
Keller posted stellar two-way play last week and drew Warrior Player of the Week honors, an award she shared with Boston University's Rebecca Leslie. Connolly, who was the MVP of the 2017 Beanpot, earned her first-ever league award as the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.
Keller backed a depleted Eagles defense to a 2-1 record last week while the unit allowed just 1.33 goals per game and 23.0 shots per game. She also shared the team lead in points with five from two goals and three assists.
On Tuesday, she anchored BC's defense that limited Northeastern to just 20 shots and a single goal at the Huskies' home rink in the Eagles' 2-1 win. She blocked a career-high eight shots as the Eagles won their seventh Beanpot title, including their third in the last four years.
On Sunday, Keller posted a career-best five points from two goals and three assists – both totals that also matched career-bests – in BC's 7-1 win over Vermont. Keller also led the Eagles' defense that held the Catamounts to 17 shots.
This is Keller's second Hockey East weekly award this season after earning defensive player of the week honors on Jan. 23. The U.S. National Team member leads all defensemen nationally in scoring (29 points), points per game (1.07) and assists (22). Among all players nationally, Keller is tied for 12th in assists and is the only defenseman with 20 or more assists. BC also boasts the nation's fifth-best defense, allowing 1.61 goals per game and 22.45 shots per game. Both figures lead all Hockey East teams.
Connolly led all Hockey East freshmen with two goals this week, scoring the game-winning goal on Tuesday in the Beanpot championship to cap the Eagles' come-from-behind, 2-1 victory. She added a breakaway goal on Sunday against Vermont after moving up from centering the team's third line to the first to accommodate for injuries.
This season, Connolly has 13 points from eight goals and five assists. She is tied for eighth nationally with five power-play goals this season.
These are the Eagles' 14th and 15th weekly awards from Hockey East this season.
Sixth-ranked Boston College (22-4-5, 16-3-3 HEA) returns to the ice on Saturday, Feb. 18, when the team travels to Providence to face the Friars at 2 p.m. at Schneider Arena. The teams meet at BC's Kelley Rink to close the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m.
