Frenzied Finish Falls Short at Virginia, 59-58
December 30, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Jerome Robinson scores 29 points; Jordan Chatman adds 18
How It Happened:
Boston College battled for all 40 minutes at Charlottesville, falling 59-58 to No. 9/9 Virginia. The loss snapped the Eagles' five-game win streak.
The Eagles erased a six-point deficit late in the second half thanks to consecutive 3-pointers from Jordan Chatman and Jerome Robinson, tying the game at 51-51 with 5:20 to play. The Cavaliers led by four - 59-55 - with under a minute to play. Robinson drained his second 3-pointer of the half, making it a one-point game with 44 ticks remaining.
UVA went to the line with 14 seconds remaining but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and a crazy sequence of possessions ensued. Trailing by one, Ky Bowman drove the lane for a layup but the shot was blocked out of bounds and the Eagles retained the basketball. The clock began without being touched on the inbounds play with 3.1 seconds left, prompting a review. BC was awarded the ball again and Nik Popovic was whistled for an offensive foul with 1.3 seconds on the clock.
The Eagles trailed by eight - 15-7 - less than six minutes into the game, but used a 12-2 run to take a 19-17 lead. Robinson and Chatman combined to score BC's first 19 points of the game. Virginia would respond with 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions to go back up 26-19. The Cavaliers led, 30-25, at the break.
