Four Eagles Qualify for New England Championships at BU Season Opener

Junior Matthew Morano Breaks 600 Meter Record
BOSTON, Mass. – The Boston College men's track and field began its indoor season on Saturday at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center for the BU season opener. Junior Matthew Morano broke the school record in the 600 meter run and four Eagles qualified for the New England Championships in their individual events.

Top finishes by the men include a second place finish in the 600 meter run by Morano and a fifth place finish in the 1000 meter run by freshman Yahya Solimon. In the field, sophomore Avery McKenzie took eighth place in the long jump and seventh place in the triple jump. On the day, 13 Eagles had top 10 finishes.

The team will next compete on Sunday, Jan. 7 at the Dartmouth Relays.

BC Highlights:
- Freshman Khalfani Green made his collegiate debut in the 400 meter dash, crossing the line in 50.21 for fifth place overall, less than a second shy of qualifying for the New England Championships.
- Classmate Mat Herrerias also finished in the top 10 in the 400 meter dash with a seventh place finish at 51.25.
- Morano finished in second place in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:19.54. He broke the school record in the 600 and qualified for the New England Championships.Â
- Junior Michael Saxon took ninth place, crossing the line at 1:22.78. Saxon also qualified for the New England Championships.
- Freshman Michael Hains ran a time of 1:56.11 in the 800 meter run to finish in seventh place. Hains is just .11 shy of qualifying for New England's in the 800.
- In the 1000 meter run, Solimon finished in fifth place at 2:29.83 to qualify for the New England Championships. Sophomore Ryan Scanlon and junior Andrew Willis also both finished in the top 10 at sixth and ninth place, respectively.
- Sophomore Sean Sullivan finished the mile in 4:18.89 to finish in seventh place overall. Freshmen Ben Davies and Ben Ruffing raced their first collegiate mile and crossed the line in 11th and 13th place.
- Junior Benjamin Osipow was the top Eagles finisher in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:38.00.
- The 4x400 meter relay team finished third place, crossing the line in 3:21.04.
- In the field events, McKenzie finished in eighth place in the long jump with a jump of 6.40 meters. He was followed by freshman Michael Oduro who took ninth place with a jump of 6.27 meters.
- McKenzie also finished in seventh place in the triple jump with a jump of 13.96 meters to qualify for the New England Championships. Oduro was right behind him in eighth place, jumping 13.59 meters.
