Eagles start 10-game league swing with Northeastern on Tuesday night
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The second-ranked Boston College women's hockey team hosts Northeastern tomorrow night, Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the first of at least four meetings this season. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m., at Kelley Rink. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3, which can be accessed via WatchESPN.com or on the ESPN app.
Â
Boston College (11-1-2, 5-0-2 HEA) comes into the game after a bye weekend in the schedule. In the Eagles' last outing, the team shuffled lines and earned an 8-1 win at Harvard last Wednesday, marking the team's highest offensive output of the year.
Â
Northeastern (9-7-2, 5-4-1 HEA) enters Tuesday's game following an undefeated weekend at the D1 in DC. On Friday, the Huskies handed No. 1 Wisconsin its first loss of the season as NU won 3-2. On Saturday, the Huskies topped Minnesota State 6-1 to finish as the only unblemished team at the event.
Â
The game is the first of 10-straight Hockey East games for Boston College. The Eagles come into the game second in the Hockey East standings, one point back of Providence who has played one more game. BC is the only undefeated team remaining in league play. Northeastern is tied for third and is tied for the most games played in the league this season.
Â
Tuesday's game marks the first of at least four meetings between the teams this season. In addition to the three Hockey East regular-season games, the two teams are set to meet in the first round of the Beanpot at BC's Kelley Rink on Feb. 6. In each of the last two years, the teams have faced off five teams each seasons with an NCAA Quarterfinal meeting in 2016 and a Hockey East Championship showdown in 2017.
Â
Overall, BC is 40-35-7 all-time against Northeastern, including a 16-14-4 mark at Kelley Rink. However, BC is 17-1-2 against Northeastern since the 2013-14 season – including an 8-1-1 record the last two years.
Â
The Eagles' lone loss in that stretch came in February when Northeastern claimed a 2-1 win at Kelley Rink. That win snapped BC's NCAA-record 63-game home unbeaten streak that had dated back to 2013. It was also the Huskies' first win in Chestnut Hill against the Eagles since October 2009. NU's win came just three days after BC topped the Huskies, 2-1, in the championship game of the 2017 Beanpot, which was played at Northeastern's Matthews Arena.
Â
Northeastern is once again paced by McKenna Brand on offense, who tops the team in both goals (9) and points (14). She leads five Huskies with double-figure points, including Veronika Pettey (6-8-14), Kasidy Anderson (7-6-13), Denisa Krizova (7-6-13) and former Eagle Tori Sullivan (2-9-11).
Â
In goal, Brittany Bulgalski has 13 starts in goal, posting a 2.60 goals against average, a .904 save percentage and a 6-5-11 record. While Bulgalski has started much of her three-year career on Huntington Ave., freshman Aerin Frankel has drawn the start in five of the last six games. This week's Hockey East Player of the Week is 3-2-1 overall, but has a 1.29 GAA and a .959 save percentage. She also backstopped the Huskies to the win over Wisconsin on Friday, making 39 saves in the victory.
For BC, Makenna Newkirk will look to extend her season-opening point streak to 15 games. Already tied for the fifth-longest point streak in program history, Newkirk is two games shy of matching the fourth-longest run in program history, which was set by Haley Skarupa '16 in 2015-16. Â
Â
After Tuesday's game, Boston College returns to the ice this weekend for a home-and-home series against arch-rival Boston University. BC hosts the Terriers on Friday, Dec. 1, with faceoff set for 2 p.m. at Kelley Rink. The teams head down Comm. Ave., on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tilt at Walter Brown Arena.
