Christopher Grando becomes the first freshman in almost a year to be named Hockey East Player of the Week
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Freshman forward Christopher Grando had a breakout performance in Boston College's weekend sweep at Vermont this weekend and was heralded as the Hockey East Player of the Week. The Islip, N.Y. native accounted for five points (2-3-5), including a big showing on Saturday, Nov. 11.
Grando started off the weekend in Friday's 4-3 victory at Gutterson Fieldhouse with his first-career multi-point performance in the maroon and gold, doling out a pair primary assists and a +3 rating.
The 5-foot-10 forward returned to his scoring ways on in BC's 5-1 win on Saturday, Nov. 11 after tallying his first-career short-handed goal and following it up with his second goal of the night at 12:19 of the third period to ice the contest.
Grando's short-handed goal is the Eagles' second short-handed marker on the season since Julius Mattila netted one against UConn on Nov. 7. The rookie also added an assist for his second-career multi-point performance.
Grando's two multi-point showings occurred in back-to-back fashion as the rookie accounted for five points (2-3-5) at UVM this past weekend. As it played out, Grando's short-handed goal also stood as the Eagles' game-winning goal, the second game-winning goal of his career.
After this past weekend, Grando is tied for 26th amongst all freshmen in college hockey, averaging 0.75 points per game (5-4-9) and tied for 87th in the nation in goals scored per game (0.42). He is also one of 36 skaters in the NCAA with at least one short-handed goal this year.
Grando is Hockey East's first freshman to be named Hockey East Player of the Week since Maine's Chase Pearson did so last season on Dec. 12, 2016. Pearson shared that award with Notre Dame's Andres Bjork, so the last rookie to be the outright Hockey East Player of the Week was New Hampshire's Patrick Grasso on Oct. 31, 2016.
BC's rookie sensation is joined by Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week Ben Mirageas (Providence) and HEA Defensive Player of the Week Max Prawdzik (Boston University).
The Eagles are currently on a five-game winning streak after sweeping Merrimack and Vermont with a win over UConn sandwiched in between and are tied for fourth in the country (Notre Dame, North Dakota) for the longest unbeaten streak in the game.
Boston College remains on the road within the conference with a Friday night tilt at the Whittemore Center against second-place New Hampshire. BC will then take on local foe Northeastern at Matthews Arena on Saturday, Nov. 18. Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
