Eagles' freshman picks up first conference honor after sweep of No. 4 UMD
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College freshman Daryl Watts was tabbed Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday after a stellar collegiate debut last week.
In the women's hockey team's two-game sweep of fourth-ranked Minnesota Duluth last week, the Toronto, Ontario, native posted a league-high five points, including a hat trick in the team's game-two win on Friday afternoon.
On Thursday, Watts picked up her first collegiate points – both assists – in BC' 4-3 win over the Bulldogs. Her assist on Caitrin Lonergan's second goal was the game-winner after she set up Makenna Newkirk's shorthanded goal to close the end of the first period.
On Friday, after Kenzie Kent tied the game, Watts scored a power-play goal at the end of the first to give BC the lead for good. She added two more even-strength goals in the second period to complete the hat trick.
After just her first weekend of play, Watts – and Lonergan – are tied for third nationally in scoring with five points apiece.
This is Watts' first Hockey East weekly honor of her career.
Boston College (2-0-0) has the weekend off before returning to the ice next Tuesday, Oct. 17, when the team hosts Quinnipiac in a non-conference game at Kelley Rink. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
