Assistant coach Brooke Griffin will represent the U.S. in the FIL Women’s World Cup this summer.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College lacrosse assistant coach Brooke Griffin was among the list of 18 players named to the U.S. Women's National Team that will compete in the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse Women's World Cup, announced on Wednesday.
Hosted every four years at a different location, Griffin will get to represent her country and help the U.S. defend its 2013 gold medal in Guildford, England, from July 12-22.
"It's an awesome opportunity to represent something bigger than myself," said Griffin. "It's a dream. When I got the call I just threw my head back knowing that all my hard work finally paid off. I FaceTimed my sister and my family right away and it was a wave of emotions for me when I was told I was getting this chance."
Before joining the Eagles coaching staff last season, Griffin was a Maryland lacrosse standout earning Big Ten Attack Player of the Year, IWLCA First Team All-America and a nomination for the Tewaaraton Award as a senior in 2015.
Griffin guided the Terrapins to two national titles and etched her name in record books, finishing with 279 career points, the sixth most in program history. She will also be joined by five of her former teammates on the World Cup roster.
"I had a chance to play with all of those girls for two or three years and it's pretty special. We all went out for the team and none of us got cut. It's a fun group going and it's definitely easier to play with people you spent years with before," said Griffin.
As a former national team member herself, head coach Acacia Walker helped the U.S take the gold in the 2009 World Cup and understands how special this opportunity is for Griffin.
"It really is a once and a lifetime opportunity. It's unique for lacrosse because the players in the U.S. are traditionally some of the best players in the world, so you're representing not just the United States but the entire lacrosse world," said Walker, showing excitement for her fellow coach.
"I would tell her to be the best teammate possible. The girls I played with are still some of my closest friends. It's not just about winning the gold but it's about the girls in that room."
With the announcement, Griffin will spend the upcoming months training for the World Cup and helping the Eagles make another push for the NCAA Tournament in the 2017 season.
