Eagles’ junior set the league’s career scoring, assist marks for defensemen this weekend
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College junior defenseman Megan Keller earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday. This is the All-American's first weekly honor of the season from the league.
Keller played large roles both offensively and defensively in the Eagles' sweep on the road at Vermont, and she also set the Hockey East records for career scoring and assists by a defenseman.
On Friday, the Farmington Hills, Mich., product was a factor in both of BC's goals in regulation. She collected an assist on Makenna Newkirk's power-play goal in the second period. That was her 49th career assist in conference play, setting a new league mark and passing former BC defenseman Emily Pfalzer's mark of 48. Later in the game – with just 46 seconds remaining – Keller's third goal of the season tied the game up and sent the contest into overtime. BC won just 39 seconds into the added session.
Saturday, Keller's assist on another Newkirk power-play goal was her 60th career point in Hockey East play, setting a new league mark for points by a defenseman.
Keller was also part of the Eagles' defensive unit that allowed just two goals last weekend and limited to Vermont to just nine shots on Friday and 20 on Sunday. The team's shutout on Saturday was its fifth of the season and league-leading fourth in conference play.
Keller's defensive player of the week award is the Eagles' 11th weekly award from Hockey East this season. It's also Keller's seventh career weekly honor from the league and her first since picking up player of the week honors on March 21, 2016.
Sixth-ranked Boston College (18-3-4, 14-2-2 HEA) returns to the ice on Wednesday, Jan. 25, when the team hosts Merrimack at 7 p.m. at Kelley Rink. The Eagles come into the contest with a six-point lead atop the Hockey East standings with two games in hand. With an 11-0-2 record in the last 13 games, BC also now has the nation's longest undefeated streak.
