Wagner Postgame Quotes
Wagner Head Coach Jason Houghtaling
Opening Statement …
"It was nice to have a 7-0 lead there and the problem is on the next kickoff we do exactly what we want to do, and we have an offside penalty. Then we kick off and they return it to our 40 and that really gave them good field position; really hurt us there. I mean the first kickoff, we had them on the 25 with a pop-up kick and had them where we wanted them, but that one really hurt us."
Â
Talking about his offense …
"We wanted to be able to run the ball a little more but obviously their defense; they were No. 1 in the country last year for a reason. They have great players and they're just extremely well-coached as a football team. Coach Addazio and his whole his staff do a great job. We wanted to try and run it but we knew it was going to be an uphill battle. At the end of the day, we didn't do a good enough job against their guys. I thought we played hard we just had a couple of mistakes, couple of dropped balls on the screens."
Â
On the BC backs …
"I don't know how many first downs we had, but not many, and our defense got on the field. We had seven first downs and the longer they were on the field, and the size of the offensive line, the physicality of them, the physicality of the running backs. Yeah, I think it wore us down. I'm extremely proud of how hard we played on defense the whole game. They didn't quit it was good."
Â
On the Wagner running backs …
"They are both really good backs I think. Mathias (McKinnon) seemed to have a little bit of a burst when he touched the ball. Denzel (Knight) for whatever reason, if there were guys at his feet or whatever, we just thought he had a little more juice."
Â
Wagner QB Alex Thomson
On preparing for BC …
"We had to do a couple of different things coming into today's game but it's a football field. We practice just like them, on the same field and we just tried to give it a go. We have to keep the momentum going because next week is a big conference week against Sacred Heart. The defense played very well today and we have to get the offense going next week."
