For the second straight season, the women’s hockey team topped the conference’s coaches poll
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The third-ranked Boston College women's hockey team was picked to repeat as Hockey East champions according to the annual preseason coaches' poll which was released on Tuesday. BC drew six of the eight available first-place votes to sit atop the nine-team poll.
The Eagles have won the last three Hockey East regular-season crowns, improving upon the prior season's performances each year. In 2013-14, BC went 18-2-1 to claim its first-ever regular-season title, and followed that with a 20-0-1 mark in 2014-15. Last year, Boston College established a record in Hockey East by posting the first-ever perfect conference season, men or women, going 24-0-0.
BC enters the 2016-17 campaign riding a 49-game undefeated streak (48-0-1) in Hockey East play that dates back to Feb. 8, 2014, a 2-0 loss at Connecticut. The Eagles have also won 24 straight games in conference action as they enter the season.
After the Eagles, No. 10 Boston University was picked to finish second this season with two first-place votes, while No. 9 Northeastern was picked to finish third and drew one first-place vote. Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Providence, Maine and Merrimack were picked to finish fourth through ninth, respectively. Coaches were unable to vote for their own teams.
Boston College will kick off the 2016-17 season on Thursday and Friday with a pair of exhibition matches at Conte Forum's Kelley Rink.
On Thursday, Sept. 22, BC will host the local NWHL entry, the Boston Pride, at 7 p.m. The team features four former Eagles – Lexi Bender '16, Blake Bolden '13, Alex Carpenter '16 and Emily Field '15 – as well as several other members of the U.S. Women's National Team including Hilary Knight, Meghan Duggan, Brianna Decker, Kacey Bellamy and Amanda Pelkey.
On Friday, Sept. 23, the Eagles will face Canadian club team Cambridge Rivulettes at 7 p.m.
The Eagle officially open the 2016-17 season next Friday, Sept. 30, when the team travels to Duluth, Minn., to play a two-game series against Minnesota Duluth. Friday's game will face off at 8 p.m. ET, while Saturday's game will be played at 4 p.m. ET.
