McKenzie Meehan scored her eighth goal of the season and Hayley Dowd added her fifth but it was not enough as Boston College fell to No. 9 Duke, 3-2, in the Eagles ACC opener on the road Saturday night.
The Eagles fell to 8-1-1 and 0-1-0 in the ACC, while Duke is now 6-2-1 and 1-0-0 in the conference.
TURNING POINT
Ten minutes into the game, BC goalkeeper Alexis Bryant was given a red card on a hard collision with a Duke offensive player in the box. Bryant was removed from the game and Duke received a penalty kick, which gave them a 1-0 early lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BC had a chance early in the game as Hayley Dowd ran onto a ball in the box and went near post to put the Eagles up 1-0. The goal was called back on an offside call.
- McKenzie Meehan had a great chance in the box but the Duke goalkeeper EJ Proctor came out and cut the angle before a defender slid the ball away.
- Eagles goalkeeper Alexis Bryant came out to snuff a chance by Duke on a breakaway. Bryant was called for a red card on the collision and had to leave the game. Erin Seppi, a rookie, replaced Bryant and had to face a penalty kick in her first action.
- Duke Kayla McCoy takes the penalty kick and guessed right but the ball slid under her hands for a 1-0 Blue Devils lead with 34 minutes left in the first half.
- Playing a player down, rookie Jenna Bike earned a penalty kick in the 24th minute of play. She cut across the box and dropped by a Duke defender. The Eagles senior McKenzie Meehan stepped up and placed the ball into the back of the goal to tie the match, 1-1.
- At the half, Boston College had six shots and two on goal, while Duke had six shots, with the only shot being on goal came from the penalty kick.
- BC senior Hayley Dowd scored her fifth goal of the season as she stole the ball from a Duke defender just over midfield. She took the ball into the box with a couple of defenders chasing her down. Dowd shot went near post for a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute of play.
- Duke tied the match, 2-2, on a goal in the 55th minute of play. Taylor Raccioppi scored on a give-and-go in the box.
- The Eagles freshman goalkeeper Erin Seppi was active in the goal area all night. She came up big in the 68th minute in a one-v-one situation. McCoy broke by the defense on a long ball. Seppi came out to cut the angle down and deflected the ball, then popped up as a defender cleared the loose ball in the box.
- Kayla McCoy pulled a loose ball in the box away from two BC defenders and placed it by Seppi in the 78th minute for a 3-2 Duke lead.
GAME NOTES
- Despite playing a player down for 80 minutes, Boston College had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Duke had 17 shots (7 on goal) in the match while BC had eight (5 on goal).
- McKenzie Meehan led the offense with three shots on goal while Hayley Dowd had two for the Eagles. Meehan now has 54 career goals and is one point away from becoming the program's all-time leading scorer. She is currently tied with Kristie Mewis '13 at 116 career points. Dowd now has 37 career goals, third on the all-time goal scoring list.
- Rookie goalkeeper Erin Seppi played a season-high 78 minutes and had three saves.
- BC is ranked 11th by TopDrawerSoccer.com, while Duke is 8th in the poll. The Eagles are receiving votes in the NSCAA poll this week and Duke is ranked 9th.
