Captains Deemed for 2016-17 Season
July 06, 2016 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior forward Chris Calnan will serve as the captain of the 2016-17 Boston College hockey team while classmates Austin Cangelosi and Ryan Fitzgerald will serve as assistant captains, according to an announcement made by head coach Jerry York.
The Eagles' new captain corps was voted on by their peers, coaches and program personnel.
Ian McCoshen was also voted a captain alongside Calnan but elected to forgo his senior season after signing an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers.
Calnan will don the 'C' following a junior season that resulted in three goals and eight assists. His first goal of last season came in game-winning fashion in the season opener at Army on Oct. 9, 2015. The Chicago draft pick was an alternate captain this past season and missed 12 games in 2015-16 due to a nagging lower-body injury.
In 103 games as an Eagle, the Norwell, Mass. native has logged 18 goals and 22 assists.
Cangelosi had a breakout campaign as a junior in 2015-16. The Estero, Fla. native played in all 41 contests for the Eagles this season and earned Hockey East honorable mention status. The speedy centerman nearly doubled his point total from his sophomore to junior season. Cangelosi finished with 20 goals this season, second most on the team.
The 5-foot-7 forward was arguably college hockey's finest faceoff man. Cangelosi not only won the most faceoffs in college hockey (545) last year, his percentage of 63.7 percent was the best rate amongst any faceoff specialist with over 150 draws.
Fitzgerald returns for his senior season after leading the Eagles with a 47-point junior campaign. The North Reading, Mass. native was a Second Team All-American after finishing 17th overall in scoring nationally, averaging 1.18 points per game.
The Boston draft pick will return to the club with 101 career points and 54 total goals, which is now tied for 50th all-time in career goals at Boston College.
Boston College concluded its 2015-16 season with a 28-8-5 mark and its 12th trip to the Frozen Four under York and fifth in the last nine seasons. The Eagles won a share of the Hockey East regular season championship after a 15-2-5 mark in conference action.
