FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Incoming freshman Christian Cavaliere captured the historic Mandeville Trophy as he won the 99th Met Junior Championship sponsored by MetLife at The Patterson Club last week.
Cavaliere was the top performer in the 36-hole stroke play portion of the tournament, finishing -5 with rounds of 68 and 69. He was the only golfer under par for the two rounds as the second-place finishers came in at +3.
The Katonah, N.Y., product, who plays out of Mahopac Golf and Beach Club, won his round of 16 match 1 up and then took a 2 & 1 decision in the quarterfinals. He advanced to the final match with a 1 up win in the semifinals.
Cavaliere lost two of the first three holes to his opponent, Max Theodorakis, in the championship match, but he holed out from the fairway on the fourth hole and birdied the sixth to square the match. He followed that up with birdies on seven and eight to take a two-hole lead, and closed out the match on the 14th hole to win 5 & 4.
The Met Junior Championship Sponsored by MetLife is recognized as the nation's oldest junior championship, being founded in 1912, and has produced a quality list of champions, including Butch and Bill Harmon, Marc Turnesa, Andrew Svoboda, Mike Miller and Cameron Young.
