Foy captained the 1980-81 team that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen
Every week this summer, BCEagles.com will catch up with a former student-athlete for #ThrowbackThursday. This week we feature former men's basketball captain Chris Foy, who captained the 1980-81 team that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen. He was also recently named the Man of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Name: Chris Foy
Sport Played: Men's Basketball
Year Graduated: 1981
Current Profession: Managing Director for Credit Sales for Brean Capital in Boston
In His Own Words: I was diagnosed in September 2012 with Acute Myeloid Leukemia with a mutation that lessened my chances of survival. Through a lot of luck, great care and an even more incredible team behind me (my wife, Noel, four sons and many BC friends), I was able to get through that tough period. I am three and a half years out and feeling good. I was nominated for Man/Woman of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and after a 10-week period, the six candidates raised more than $611,000 for research and patient care. My team won Man of the Year by raising a total of $211,000.
Best Memory of BC: The moments away from the games; the relationships with teammates during some great and tough times. You really find out what's under the hood of people when it gets tough. I enjoyed being around tough players.
As far as memories from games: playing at the old Boston Garden, Madison Square Garden, Pauley Pavilion at UCLA (in front of John Wooden) and Hawaii, winning the Big East regular season title and going 15-0 at home in the great Roberts Center.
Advice for Current Student-Athletes: From your freshman year on, take steps to put yourself out there. Connect with graduates of BC. Be curious. Get uncomfortable by putting yourself out there and let us learn what is under your hood.
