Eagles’ captain taken seventh overall
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Rising senior captain Andie Anastos was chosen seventh overall – third pick in the second round – by the Connecticut Whale in today's National Women's Hockey League Draft.
This the second-annual NWHL Draft, and Anastos represents the fifth Boston College selection in two seasons.
Anastos was one of the Eagles' three captains of the Eagles' record-breaking 2015-16 team that advanced to the NCAA Championship game and finished the year with a 40-1-0 record.
Anastos enters her senior year ranked 12th on the Eagles' career scoring chart with 102 points (42 goals, 60 assists) in 117 career games. Last year, she posted a career-best 37 points from 14 goals and a career-high 23 assists.
Following the completion of their collegiate eligibility, players drafted in in the NWHL Draft will have the option to sign with the teams that have their draft rights, or pursue free agency and sign with another team.
The NWHL enters its second season this fall and is a professional league with a salary budget to pay its 17-player rosters. The league is comprised of four teams: New York Riveters, Boston Pride, Connecticut Whale and Buffalo Beauts.
Last year, four Eagles were drafted in the inaugural NWHL Draft: Alex Carpenter (No. 1 overall), Haley Skarupa (No. 5 overall), Lexi Bender (No. 11 overall) and Dana Trivigno (No. 13 overall). Further, Kaliya Johnson recently signed with Connecticut for the 2016-17 season.
Additionally, several other Eagles were rostered by NWHL teams in 2015-16: Blake Bolden (Boston), Emily Field (Boston), Meghan Fardelmann (New York), Meagan Mangene (Boston), Emily Pfalzer (Buffalo) and Kelli Stack (Connecticut).
