Eagles Finish Fourth At The Team National Championship
May 31, 2016 | Sailing
The Boston College sailing team placed fourth at the LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship on North San Diego Bay. This event is the second of three collegiate sailing national championships co-hosted by San Diego Yacht Club and the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference this spring. Yale University won the national champion and winner of the Walter C. Wood Trophy for the fourth year in a row.
The day began with completing the top eight round robins. The conditions were cloudy with light winds to start the day from the west northwest and the winds picked up a bit in the afternoon around 12 knots under sunny skies.
Today the teams were fighting to advance into the final four round. Due to the competitiveness of each team in this event, no one went through undefeated. Yale finished the top eight round with two losses, Boston College with four, Georgetown University with one and St. Mary's College of Maryland with three. Going into the final four any one of the four teams had a chance at winning the regatta. However, after Yale won their second race against St. Mary's, they clinched the regatta.
After the first day of racing, Boston College was tied with St. Mary's for second place with a 9-1 record. Yale went 10-1 on the day.
The BC team on the first day was 2016 Eagle of the Year Raul Rios, junior Allison Ferraris, junior Harry Koeppel, junior Hannah Lynn, sophomore Charles Sinks and senior Katherine Downey.
On day two, Boston College the team took second with a 14-4 record. The Eagles took second on a tiebreaker with St. Mary's. Yale placed first at 16-1, the only loss coming against St. Mary's.
The Eagles went 17-8 on the final day of racing and fell to fourth place while St. Mary's went 18-7 for third place and Georgetown was second with a 19-6 record. Yale finished the final day 21-4 to earn the title.
