
Matheson Added to Canadian National Team

Former captain Michael Matheson joins up with Team Canada for the 2016 IIHF World Men’s Ice Hockey Championship
SUNRISE, Fla. – Former Boston College captain Michael Matheson will represent Team Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Men's Ice Hockey Championship in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia from May 6-22.

Matheson is the fifth Eagle to take part in the Men's World Championship as recent Eagles Thatcher Demko (2013-16), Noah Hanifin (2014-15), Steve Santini (2013-16) and Miles Wood (2015-16) will don the red, white and blue for Team USA.

The former first-round pick of the Florida Panthers captained the Eagles as a junior and played in 112 games for Boston College. The Canadian logged 14 goals and 57 assists (71 points) along the way.

Matheson racked up several accolades during his time on The Heights. As a freshman, Matheson was a unanimous selection for the All-Hockey East Rookie Team and as a sophomore, was distinguished as a member of the All-Hockey East First Team. The current Panther was also honored as a two-time New England Men's Division I All-Star. Most notably, Matheson was a Second-Team All-American as voted on by the American Hockey Coaches Association in 2014-15.

The Pointe-Claire, Quebec native played in three games in the regular season with Florida and recorded one assist in five Stanley Cup playoff games. The 6-foot-2, 192-pounder recorded 20 points (8-12-20) in 54 games with the Portland Pirates (AHL) this season and recorded one assist in three Calder Cup playoff games.

Matheson will meet his former teammates in the first contest of the Men's World Championship at the Yublieyny Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia when rivals Canada and the United States square off. Game time is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. (EST).
