COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Boston College's legendary hockey coach Jerry York has been bestowed with USA Hockey's Distinguished Achievement Award and will be honored with that distinction at USA Hockey's Annual Congress. York will be recognized at the President's Awards Dinner on Friday, June 10 at the Hotel Elegante in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The USA Hockey Distinguished Achievement Award was created in 1991 and presented annually to a United States citizen(s) who has made hockey his or her profession and has made outstanding contributions, on or off the ice, to the sport in America.
York led the 2015-16 Eagle squad to its 25th trip to the Frozen Four which is now the new standard in college hockey. BC's skipper has been a part of 12 of those trips, and 13 in all after winning his first national title at Bowling Green in 1984.
He has led 23 teams to 25 victories or more in a season throughout his coaching tenure and has also guided Boston College to four national titles (2001, 2008, 2010 and 2012).
This season, York cracked a figure that may never be matched after he achieved his 1,000th-career victory on Jan. 22, 2016 at Massachusetts in 8-0 fashion. In 44 seasons of coaching, York has amassed a record of 1,012-599-110 (.620), including a 545-264-76 (.659) total at Boston College over the course of 22 seasons.
His effort behind the bench has earned countless honors including the 1977 Spencer Penrose Award, presented annually to the NCAA Coach of the Year, as well as the New England Coach of the Year twice, Hockey East Coach of the Year on three occasions, and CCHA Coach of the Year in 1981-82.
His coaching achievements have helped earn him several accolades, including the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2010, presented for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, and an induction into the Bowling Green State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. He also had his Boston College jersey retired on April 12, 2010.
The awards' night will also feature the presentation of the Excellence in Safety Award, Chet Stewart Award, Adult Member of the Year, Walter Yaciuk Award, Bob Johnson Award and William Thayer Tutt Award. The outgoing Brian Fishman and Brendan Burke Interns will also be honored at the dinner.
