Former Eagle captain Michael Matheson not only helped Team Canada to its 26th gold medal at the IIHF World Championship in Russia, but he was voted as the tournament's top defensemen with six points and a +11 rating

MOSCOW, Russia – Former Boston College captain Michael Matheson was tabbed as the Best Defensemen at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, helping anchor Team Canada to the gold medal on Sunday afternoon.

The Pointe-Claire, Quebec native tied for second amongst all defensemen at the World Championship in St. Petersberg and Moscow, tallying six points, including two goals and four assists in 10 games played to earn the distinction of top blue liner.

The current Florida Panther finished second amidst all defensemen in the tournament with a +11 plus minus rating and was third in the entire IIHF World Championship.

Matheson helped anchor the best penalty-killing unit of the tournament, surrendering only two power play goals (93.1 percent).

Hanifin lead all BC skaters with three points (1-2-3) while Wood scored one goal early in the tournament. All three skaters (Santini, Wood, Hanifin) played in every game for the red, white and blue. Demko did not dress in a game but was a key component in preparation.
