Men Squad Up for Penn Relays
April 26, 2016 | Men's Track & Field
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College Men's Track and Field team will be travelling to Philadelphia, Pa., this upcoming week for one the world's most famous track meets: the Penn Relays. Since its inaugural year in 1895, the Penn Relays has seen some of the best runners and pure athletes in the world compete on the Franklin Field track at the University of Pennsylvania.
This year, the BC men will be sending three different relay teams to Penn, hoping to post impressive times alongside tremendous competition.
First, the Eagles 4x400m squad will feature the team's fastest quarter-milers this season. Junior Nicholas Nash, fresh off of a PR in the 400m, will lead off and hand to freshman Michael Saxon, who has been focusing in the 400m hurdles this spring. Next, freshman Oliver Boucher will grab the stick from classmate Saxon, who will pass on the baton to senior Obinna Nwankwo, the BC record holder in the indoor 400m dash, to anchor the relay for the Eagles.
The Eagles will also send a 4x800 team to the Relays. Leading off will be freshman Johnny Kemps, having just set a new personal best in the 1500m. Kemps will hand to classmate Ian Rithcie, who will be relaying in his signature event, before passing to sophomore Evan Gray. Gray, who just posted his season best 800m time at the Georgia Tech Invitational, will then give way to freshman Matt Morano for the anchor leg.
Finally, Boston College will run a distance medley relay, one of the more unique relays in the sport. Consisting of 1200m, 400m, 800m and 1600m legs, respectively, the DMR is always sure to bring excitement to the track. For the Eagles, leading off in the 1200m leg will be the freshman Kemps, who will pass on the baton to Nash to run his best distance. Ritchie will receive the stick from Nash to run the third leg, and after 800m will allow junior James Zingarini to do the anchoring in the 1600m.
