Eagles Sweep Hockey East Weekly Awards

Carpenter, Newkirk, Burt all claim conference honors after the Eagles won the 2016 Hockey East Tournament
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College swept Hockey East's weekly awards on Monday after the Eagles claimed the 2016 Hockey East Tournament title yesterday with a 5-0 victory over Boston University's Lawler Rink.
Alex Carpenter was tabbed the Warrior Player of the Week for the ninth time this season, while Makenna Newkirk grabbed her fifth Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week nod. Katie Burt was the Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Carpenter, whose nine player of the week awards this year is the conference's record, was the unanimous vote as the 2016 Hockey East Tournament MVP on Sunday. The senior forward from North Reading, Mass., netted five points in two games this past weekend, scoring three goals and adding two assists to lead the Eagles to the championship.
On Saturday in the semifinals against UConn, her third-period power-play goal stood as the game-winner, while she also assisted on Haley Skarupa's power-play goal to open the game in the first period. Sunday, Carpenter netted three points, including two goals as BC skated to the championship.
On the season, Carpenter has a career-high – and program-record – 82 points from 41 goals and 41 assists.
Newkirk shared the scoring lead for the entire 2016 Hockey East Tournament, collecting eight points in four games. Her five assists led the conference tournament and she had at least one point in each game. This past weekend, she tallied three assists – two on Saturday and one on Sunday, including game-winning helpers on both game-winning goals.
Earlier in the weekend, the Scottsdale, Ariz., product was announced as Hockey East's 2016 Rookie of the Year, and was a unanimous selection to the conference's All-Rookie team. Her five rookie of the week awards leads all players this year.
This season, Newkirk has tallied 48 points from 21 goals – most by a freshman nationally – and 27 assists.
Burt led all goaltenders playing in the Hockey East Tournament with a 4-0-0 record, a 1.25 goals against average and one shutout – in the championship game – while her .942 save percentage was one one-thousandth of a point back of the leader, UConn's Elaine Chuli (.943).
This is Burt's third Defensive Player of the Week award this season, and she is a three-time goalkeeper of the month. She also repeated at Hockey East's Goaltending Champion, before earning honorable mention Hockey East All-Star honors.
The Lynn, Mass., product enters the NCAA Tournament ranked third nationally in goals against average (1.16) and shutouts (13), fourth in save percentage (.945) and leads the nation in wins (33) and winning percentage (1.00).
The No. 1 Boston College women's hockey team (38-0-0) – the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament – will face sixth-ranked Northeastern in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 12. Puck drop is set for 1 p.m. at BC's Kelley Rink at Conte Forum.
