Women’s Hockey Earns No. 1 Seed in NCAA Tournament
March 06, 2016 | Women's Hockey
Eagles will host NCAA Quarterfinal match vs. Northeastern on Saturday at 1 p.m.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College women's hockey team earned the No. 1 overall seed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, as announced Sunday night by the NCAA. BC earned Hockey East's automatic bid after winning the conference's tournament earlier today, topping Boston University 5-0.
BC will face a familiar foe in the NCAA Quarterfinals - cross-town rival Northeastern - on Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m. at Kelley Rink. The Eagles and Huskies have met four times so far this season with BC winning all four matches, including the 2016 Beanpot Championship game.
The game will feature the nation's top three scorers – Boston College's Alex Carpenter (82 pts.) and Haley Skarupa (73 pts.), and Northeastern's Kendall Coyne (83 pts.). Carpenter and Coyne are two of the three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top Division I women's hockey player.
BC also boasts the No.1 offense in the country (5.37 goals per game), balanced by the No. 3 defense (1.18 goals allowed per game). Northeastern has the No. 3 ranked offense (4.38 goals per game) and the No. 15 ranked defense (2.41 goals allowed per game).
Boston College, which is 38-0-0 on the season, is just the second team in NCAA history to enter the NCAA Tournament with a perfect record. The women's hockey team is the first women's team in Boston College history to draw the No. 1 seed in any NCAA Tournament.
Northeastern is 28-8-1 on the season, and went 20-4-0 in Hockey East play. The Huskies fell to BU in the semifinals of the Hockey East Tournament, 4-3, on Saturday night, sending the Terriers through to face the Eagles in the championship game. BC won that game earlier today, 5-0.
Ticket and streaming information will be released later this week.
The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the 2016 Frozen Four, which will be hosted by the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. on Friday, March 18 and Sunday, March 20.
