Duo works through secondary bracket at Pacific Coast Doubles Championship

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The sophomore doubles tandem of Jeffrey Melvin and Kent Mukai worked their way through to the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the 127th annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship this weekend.

After dropping their opening round match in the main bracket to a non-collegiate pairing, Melvin and Mukai won their opening match, 8-3 over the amateur duo of Owen Hambrook and Denvs Pume in the first round of the consolation bracket. After that match, they took advantage of a second-round bye before topping San Diego, Calif., team Sreeganesh Manoharan and Nikita Pereverzin, 8-3, in the third round.

Melvin and Mukai then had a pair of walk-overs in the fourth round and quarterfinals, sending them into the semifinals where Baylor's tandem of Domiink Mueller and Mazime Tchoutakian beat the Eagles 6-2, 6-2.

The duo of Gennady Burakovsky and Will Turner also advanced in the consolation bracket, topping an amateur pair from southern California, 9-7, before using a bye to gain entry into the third round where they fell, 8-3, to the top USC duo of Nick Crystal and Lauren Verboven – ranked No. 74 nationally – who ultimately won the consolation bracket.
