Keller, Newkirk and Burt honored by the conference for two games in Durham
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Three members of the Boston College women's hockey team were recognized by Hockey East for their performances in the Eagles' trip to the 2016 Frozen Four, where they fell in the national championship game to Minnesota, 3-1.
Sophomore defenseman Megan Keller was named the Warrior Player of the Week, Makenna Newkirk was the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week and Katie Burt was the Defensive Player of the Week.
Keller recorded assists in both of the Eagles' games, including the key set-up from behind the goal on the game-tying goal with less than four minutes to play in BC's come-from-behind, overtime win over No. 4 Clarkson in the national semifinal. She also had the primary assist on Newkirk's goal in the national championship game against the Gophers.
Keller finished the season with 52 points, most in school history by a defenseman, tops nationally among all defensemen and tied for ninth nationally among all skates. Her 40 assists this year ranked third nationally behind teammates Alex Carpenter (45) and Haley Skarupa (44). Keller's +64 rating also led all players nationally and she earned All-America First Team honors. This is Keller's first player of the week honor this season and her fifth weekly honor this year.
Newkirk recorded her 22nd goal of the season in the national championship game, pushing Keller's blocked shot past Minnesota goaltender Amanda Leveille with just under six minutes to play to break the shutout. Her 22 goals were most nationally by a freshman, and her 49 points on the season were second nationally among freshmen behind Minnesota's Sarah Potomak. Overall, Newkirk's 49 points were tied for 12th nationally, while she finished second in voting to Potomak for National Freshman of the Year.
Burt backed the Eagles into their first-ever national championship contest, making 34 saves in the national semifinal against Clarkson on Friday night – including 16 in the third period to allow BC to complete its comeback effort. In the national championship game, Burt stopped 31 shots. On the season, she had five games with 30 or saves, with two coming at the Frozen Four.
Burt finished the season third nationally in goals against average (1.23) and shutouts (13), fourth in save percentage (.943) and first in wins (35) and winning percentage (.972).
