Newkirk, Burt Grab Monthly Honors from Hockey East

Newkirk, Burt named rookie and goaltender of the month, respectively, by Hockey East
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Freshman Makenna Newkirk and sophomore Katie Burt were recognized by Hockey East on Wednesday as rookie and goaltender of the month, respectively, for February. Sophomore defenseman Megan Keller was the runner-up for player of the month.
This is Newkirk's first rookie of the month award this year, in addition to her league-high four rookie of the week awards. For Burt, this her third goaltender of the month nod to go with her two defensive player of the week accolades this season.
In February, Newkirk paced all freshman nationally with 17 points from 6 goals and 11 assists. Her 11 assists were second nationally in the month, behind Keller. Newkirk posted five multiple-point games in nine contests, including a pair of two-goal games: vs. No. 6 Northeastern on Feb. 12 and vs. Maine in game 1 of the Hockey East quarterfinal series on Feb. 26. Newkirk's +15 plus/minus rating in February was also second-best nationally.
Overall, Newkirk has posted 45 points (21 goals, 24 assists), leads the nation in freshman goal scoring and is second in freshman scoring by four points.
Burt went a perfect 9-0-0 in February, including backing the Eagles to the 2016 Beanpot championship with a pair of shutouts against Harvard and No. 6 Northeastern after which she won the Bertagna Award as the tournament's top goaltender. Her 1.39 goals against average was best in the league, while her three shutouts also led the league.
Overall, Burt is third nationally in goals against average (1.17) and shutouts (school-record 12) and is fourth in save percentage (.944). With a 31-0-0 mark on the season, she also leads the NCAA in winning percentage, and is also the NCAA's career leader in winning percentage (61-3-2, .939).
The No. 1 Boston College women's hockey team (36-0-0) will next face fourth-seeded Connecticut (17-14-5) in the semifinals of the Hockey East Tournament on Saturday, March 5. Faceoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Merrimack College's Lawler Rink. The winner will face the winner of the other semifinal – featuring No. 6 Northeastern vs. Boston University – in the championship game on Sunday, March 6, at 1:30 p.m., also at Lawler Rink.
