Boston College claims three All-Americans and the National Coach of the Year, recognizing the Eagles’ record-setting season
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – The No. 1 Boston College women's hockey team has claimed a program-record three All-Americans and the National Coach of the Year, according to announcement made by the American Hockey Coaches Association at tonight's Frozen Four Banquet.
Senior Alex Carpenter earned her third All-America nod – and her second-straight first-team recognition – while sophomore defenseman Megan Keller earned her first All-America honor with a place on first team. Senior Haley Skarupa garnered her first-career All-America recognition with a spot on the second team.
Additionally, head coach Katie Crowley earned her second-straight AHCA National Coach of the Year award, leading the Eagles into their sixth Frozen Four with an unblemished 39-0-0 record.
For the second straight year, Carpenter leads the nation in scoring, registering a career-high and Boston College single-season record 85 points in 39 games (2.18 points per game). Her 43 goals and 42 assists are second nationally in both categories, and she holds the national lead in game-winning goals (8), power-play assists (18) and power-play points (27). The North Reading, Mass., product's 584 face-off wins and .699 faceoff percentage are also tops in the country. Carpenter's nine power-play goals are third nationally, while her four shorthanded goals, four hat tricks and +60 plus/minus rating are all the second-highest totals nationally.
Carpenter's 85 points are the most in all of Division I ice hockey this year – women or men – and is the 10th-highest single-season total in women's NCAA history. She was a Hockey East All-Star First Team honoree for the fourth time in her career and was also the unanimous MVP of the 2016 Hockey East Tournament, which the Eagles won for the second time in program history. Carpenter is one of the Top-3 Finalists for the 2016 Patty Kazmaier Award, which will be presented Saturday morning.
Keller paced the Eagles' defense, which is ranked third in the nation allowing just 1.18 goals per game while BC set a program record with 14 shutouts. The Farmington Hills, Mich., product is the first defenseman in program history to record 50 points in a season, and her 38 assists not only rank fourth nationally among all skaters, but is a BC single-season record by a defenseman. Her +64 rating leads all players nationally, while her 50 points are the 10th-highest total in the country. Keller was voted the Hockey East Best Defenseman and was a unanimous selection to both the Hockey East All-Star First Team and Hockey East All-Tournament team. She was also a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award this season.
Skarupa is third nationally in scoring with a career-high 77 points. The Rockville, Md., product has a career-high 33 goals and leads the nation with a career-best 44 assists. She also shares the national lead in game-winning goals (8) and is second nationally in power-play goals (12). Skarupa enters the Frozen Four with the Eagles' longest point streak this season – 15 games – and has recorded 21 multiple-point games this year. Among that total are six games with four or more points, including each of the last two games. Her +57 rating is fourth-best nationally. Skarupa also earned Hockey East All-Star First Team honor and was also a member of the Hockey East All-Tournament Team. For the second-straight season, Skarupa was a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award.
Crowley collected her second-straight AHCA Coach of the Year honor after the Eagles became the second team in NCAA history to reach the Frozen Four with a perfect record. The Eagles were also the first program in Hockey East history – men or women – to complete a perfect league season, going 24-0-0 in conference play.
The Eagles lead the nation in scoring, averaging 5.36 goals per game – more than half-a-goal more than the second-best team – and scoring margin (4.18 goals per game). BC also set the NCAA record for team points in a season (580) and assists in a season (371). The team's 209 goals are the fifth-highest total in NCAA history. BC has advanced to its sixth Frozen Four in program history, and the fifth under Crowley's leadership.
The No. 1 Boston College women's hockey team (39-0-0) will face No. 5 Clarkson (30-4-5) in the national semifinals on Friday, March 18, at 4 p.m. The Frozen Four will be played at New Hampshire's Whittemore Center in Durham, N.C. The winner of the BC-Clarkson semifinal will face the winner of the No. 2 Wisconsin-No. 3 Minnesota semifinal on Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m. in the national championship game.
Frozen Four three-game packages and individual-game tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Boston College will be the home team for the duration of its run at the tournament.
