Eagles wrap up day-before activities at the Frozen Four
DURHAM, N.H. - The No. 1 Boston College women's hockey team got formal Frozen Four preparations underway earlier today with a practice at the Whittemore Center ahead of Friday's Frozen Four national semifinal.
The Eagles will face unseeded - but No. 5 ranked - Clarkson at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, March 18. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m. The game will be streamed live at NCAA.com, while Tom Grace will have the call on the radio at WNTN 1550 AM.
Thursday afternoon, BC got its first skate on the Whittemore Center's ice since mid-November, when they earned a 3-0 road win against New Hampshire.
Once the 75-minute on-ice session was over, head coach Katie Crowley, senior forward Dana Trivigno and sophomore defenseman Megan Keller met with media at the Eagles' semifinal press conference. | FULL QUOTE SHEET
"At this point, Frozen Four, playoff hockey, this is do or die," Trivigno said. "Yes, we're happy with what we've done so far, but we're just constantly looking towards the next game, trying to play our best game against Clarkson."
Entering Friday's game at 39-0-0 this season, Crowley noted that the team's success has helped draw some added attention.
"For us I think it's been a fun year. We have exposed how good hockey is around the Boston area. These players have really put the time and effort in to be a successful team this year and find a way to win games every game day. That has certainly drawn attention to us at Boston College and to our team and our program."
Friday's opponent is not an unfamiliar one to the Eagles. BC has faced the Golden Knights in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments, but in the quarterfinal round. In 2014, Clarkson topped BC, 3-1, in Potsdam before the Eagles returned the favor with a 5-1 win in Chestnut Hill in 2015.
"They're definitely a hardworking team," Keller said. "What we've talked about is just keep our feet moving, battle through plays. Our coaches have played in these big games, coached in these big games and do a nice job of preparing us all week."
The Eagles had a light afternoon following a team lunch, with some downtime before the annual Frozen Four Banquet tonight at the Portsmouth Harbor Events Center.
All four Frozen Four participants – which also include WCHA foes Minnesota and Wisconsin - will be feted by the NCAA at the yearly event.
Additionally, the American Hockey Coaches Association is expected to announce the 2016 All-America teams, as well as the national coach of the year, at the banquet. Crowley is one of six candidates for the award, one she also won in 2015.
Once that event concludes, however, all attention shifts to the national semifinal on Friday.
"I think I can speak for the team on the whole that we have our eyes on the prize," Trivigno said. "Hopefully we can come out of the weekend with a win."
