Freshman shared the national lead in scoring last week
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College freshman Makenna Newkirk won Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Monday after sharing the national lead in scoring with seven points in a 3-0-0 week for the No. 1 ranked women's hockey team.
On Tuesday in the Beanpot final against No. 6 Northeastern, Newkirk collected three points - one goal and two assists - for her second three-point effort in the tournament as BC won 7-0 and claimed their second title in two years.
Friday, she followed up with another three-point game against the Huskies, this time scoring two goals and adding one assist in the Eagles' 5-3 win that clinched the No. 1 seed in the Hockey East tournament.
Sunday at Vermont, she drew an assist on the Eagles' first goal, the eventual game-winner by Andie Anastos in the 3-0 win that secured the 2015-16 Hockey East regular-season crown.
This is Newkirk's third Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week award this season. On the season, the Scottsdale, Ariz., product has 39 points (18 goals, 21 assists), is the nation's leading freshman goal-scorer and is second in points overall among freshmen.
The Eagles will close out the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series with Providence. BC will host the first game on Friday, Feb. 19. The Senior Day faceoff is set for 4 p.m. and the Eagles' six seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony, while the team will be presented with the 2015-16 Hockey East regular-season trophy following the game. The two teams will wrap up the slate on Saturday at PC's Schneider Arena at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20.
