Three Eagles Earn ACC All-Academic Team Honors

Kavalec named to team for second straight year
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Three members of the Boston College football team – sophomore Jon Baker, and juniors Truman Gutapfel and Kevin Kavalec – earned spots on the 2015 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Football Team, the league announced on Wednesday.

It was the first honor for Bake and Gutapfel and the second for Kavalec, as he was named to the team as a sophomore.

To be eligible for consideration for the team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his undergraduate academic career. Graduate students needed to maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average for both the previous semester and for their graduate school careers. All 14 ACC schools were represented on the team. The ACC has selected an All-ACC Academic Football team every year since 1954.

Baker, a 6-foot-3, 293-pound offensive lineman from Millis, Mass., started all 12 games of the 2015 season. After starting the first three games at left guard, he moved to center to fill a void left by injuries and succeeded. He was a member of the O-line that helped the Eagles registered over 300 yards of total offense and over 200 rushing yards five times and allowed one sack or less five times. Baker is enrolled in the Carroll School of Management and earned the Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement as a freshman.

Gutapfel, a 6-foot-3, 281-pound defensive tackle from Harrison, Ohio, started every game for the Eagles last season. He registered 26 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and two sacks as a member of the top defense in the nation. He tied a career high with 2.5 tackles for a loss of eight yards on a career-high six tackles at Louisville on Oct. 24. Gutapfel is an economics majors in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences.

Kavalec, a 6-foot-2, 253-pound defensive end from Middleburg Heights, Ohio played in 11 games, making four starts in 2015. He missed one game due to injury. He tallied 20 tackles, including eight for loss and one sack on the nation's top defense. He notched a season-high five tackles, including three solo stops, at Duke on Oct. 3 and had 1.5 tackles for loss at No. 1 Clemson on Oct. 17. The ecomonics major is enrolled in the Morrissey School of Arts and Sciences and has earned the Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement every year of his career at BC.
