Nation’s co-leader in sacks collects All-ACC accolades
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College junior defensive end Harold Landry has been named to the Associated Press All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team, the AP announced Wednesday. A panel of 14 writers and broadcasters from the nine ACC states voted on the teams.
The honor is the latest for Landry who is having one of the best seasons of any defensive player in the country. An All-ACC second team selection, Landry has also been selected as the Division I Gold Helmet of the Year Award recipient, given annually to the top player in New England by the New England Football Writers' Association and the recipient of the 78th annual George "Bulger" Lowe Award, "New England's Heisman Trophy" and one of America's oldest college football accolades.
Landry was also one of six finalists for the Ted Hendricks Award, given annually to the nation's top defensive end.
Boston College ranked as one of the nation's top defenses the entire season. Currently, the Eagles rank seventh in the nation and first in the ACC in total defense allowing just 310.6 yards per game. BC has allowed just 106.9 rushing yards per game, seventh-best nationally and second in the conference.
BC is also among the top-20 defenses nationally in third-down conversion percentage defense (12th, 31.9%), fourth-down conversion percentage defense (16th, 36.4%), first-down defense (Seventh, 184), fumbles recovered (11th, 12), sacks (Ninth, 3.25 per game) and tackles-for-loss (13th, 7.7 per game).
23).
The North Carolina native is tied for the national lead with 15 sacks and leads the country with seven fumbles forced. Landry rewrote the Boston College single-season record for sacks in 2016, breaking the old mark of 13 held by Eric Storz (1997) and Mike Mamula (1994). Landry is tied for fourth in the country with 20.5 tackles-for-loss, the second-best total in Boston College single-season history behind only Mathias Kiwanuka's 25.5 TFLs in 2004.
Boston College will face Maryland in the 2016 Quick Lane Bowl. ESPN will televise the Quick Lane Bowl live from Ford Field in Detroit on Monday, Dec. 26 at 2:30 p.m.
The Quick Lane Bowl is the 25th bowl appearance in school history for Boston College and the 15th bowl in the last 18 years for the Eagles. Steve Addazio is the second coach in school history (Jack Bicknell) to lead the Eagles to three bowls in the first four seasons.
