Senior assistant captain Austin Cangelosi was named the Hockey East Player of the Week after scoring Boston College's first natural hat trick in over 15 years
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Senior assistant captain Austin Cangelosi was tapped as Warrior Hockey East Player of the Week after his noteworthy performance last week at Maine.
A week prior at Massachusetts on Oct. 29, Cangelosi tallied both a short-handed goal as well as a power play goal in a 7-4 victory. The Estero, Fla. native backed that feat up on Friday night in Portland with another short-handed goal and power play goal performance in addition to an even-strength goal for his first-career hat trick.
Not only did Cangelosi's hat trick contain three different types of goals, it was a natural hat trick (three uninterrupted goals in a game). The senior's accomplishment marked Boston College's first "natural hat trick" since Brian Gionta scored five goals on his first five shots on Jan. 27, 2001, also against Maine, at Kelley Rink. Thirty-five other Eagle hat tricks have occurred between Gionta's modern-day record and Cangelosi's natural hat trick.
Cangelosi is currently 18th, nationally, in scoring with 0.73 goals per game (8 total) and is one of nine skaters in all of college hockey with two short-handed goals. Only Boston University's Clayton Keller has a pair of short-handed goals in Hockey East.
BC's centerman is also the country's most dangerous skater on the draw, winning almost 68 percent of his battles (166-of-245) amongst primary faceoff men.
The 5-foot-9 center leads the Eagles with eight goals scored and is tied for second in scoring with 10 points (8-2-10).
Last season, Cangelosi was tabbed as a Hockey East honorable mention.
Cangelosi joins Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week Clayton Keller (BU) and Defensive Player of the Week Tyler Wall (UMass Lowell) as this week's Hockey East award winners.
