Boston College sailing made it a clean sweep this weekend as senior Erika Reineke won her fourth National Singlehanded Sailing Championship, while rookie Scott Rasmussen became the first male to win on the men's side. The event was held in Galveston, Texas over the weekend.
Reineke returned to The Heights for her final season after sitting out last year to compete in the Olympic Trials. She is the first BC sailor to win four singlehanded titles. She surpassed former Eagles of the Year Annie Haeger, who won three National Singlehanded Championships.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Reineke finished with 31 points, 39 less points than her closest competitors Charleston's Kelly-Ann Arrindell and Brown's Lindsey Baab with 70 points apiece. In the 14 races in the event, Reineke placed first in eight races, two second place finishes and two third. Her lowest place was eight place in the 11th race.
Teammate Isabella Loosbrock placed 11th in the event. She placed second in race six, and had two fifth place finishes and a fourth in the 14th race.
On the men's side Scott Rasmussen earned his first National Singlehanded Championship by posting 81 points, three less than second place finisher Gerald Williams from the College of Charleston.
The Eagles rookie earned three first place finishes, including the final race of the day. After opening up with a 12th place finish in the first race, Rasmussen placed fifth, second, fifth, eight, fifth, sixth and two seventh places before finishing the run with two firsts in race 10 and 11. He faltered in race 12 with a 17th place finish but bounced back with a fourth and first.
A native of Cape Coral, Florida, Rasmussen is the first BC men's sailor to win the championship.
