Eagles garner their biggest haul of postseason awards in their ACC tenure
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A program-record four Boston College field hockey players earned All-ACC honors for the 2016 season, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced today ahead of its annual championship.
Two seniors and two sophomores were named second team All-ACC. The first and second All-ACC teams, as well as offensive player of the year, defensive of the year, freshman of the year and coach of the year, were determined by a vote of the conference's seven head coach.
Sophomore midfielder Ymke Rose Gote, senior goalkeeper Audra Hampsch, sophomore back Frederique Haverhals and senior midfielder Emily McCoy each earned all-conference honors this season as the Eagles matched their best-ever ACC finish (3-3) and drew their highest-ever seeding in the ACC Championship (No. 3), which starts tomorrow.
This marks the Eagles' most all-conference honors since joining the ACC in 2005, besting the team's three recognitions in 2014.
Gote has been an anchor in the midfield this season and has been an integral component of the Eagles' outletting and defending. She's also a key contributor on both attack and defensive penalty corners and helped BC net three goals off corners in league play, which ranks third in the league. While starting all 18 games, she's recorded four assists.
Hampsch ranked third in the league in saves (30) in ACC action. Entering the postseason, her 92 saves overall lead the ACC, while her 5.11 saves per game average rank second in the conference and 30th nationally among all goalkeepers. Her .736 save percentage ranks 18th nationally.
As the team's center back, Haverhals shares the ACC lead in game-winning goals (2) in league play. She was the team's second-leading scorer in ACC games with three goals. Overall, Haverhals is tied for fourth on the team in scoring with 13 points (3 goals, team-high 7 assists). Like Gote, she's a constant presence on both attacking and defensive penalty corners and was the conference's co-defensive player of the week on Oct. 11 for her play in the Eagles' two road wins at No. 8 Louisville and Indiana.
McCoy earned her second-straight All-ACC second-team honor this year. A mainstay on the Eagles' attack, McCoy was also the league's offensive player of the week on Nov. 1 for her performances against No. 16 Harvard and No. 3 Connecticut last week. In league play, she has notched one assist, but has 13 points (5 goals, 3 assists) in 18 starts overall this season. A 2015 NFHCA All-American, McCoy is tied for 10th in the Eagles' career goals chart, and ranked 11th in the team's career points ranking (84 pts.).
The 11th-ranked Eagles (10-8, 3-3 ACC) begin play in the 2016 ACC Championship tomorrow. The annual tournament will be hosted by Wake Forest at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
BC will face No. 6 seed – and seventh-ranked – Virginia (12-7, 3-3 ACC) in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 3. The game will be televised live by regional sports networks – including NESNplus locally – and streamed on ACC Network Extra (WatchESPN), but is subject to blackout restrictions.
The winner of the BC-Virginia quarterfinal will advance to face the winner of the Syracuse (No. 2 seed, No. 2 ranked)/Wake Forest (No. 7 seed, No. 19 ranked) quarterfinal in the semifinal round at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4.
