All-American picks up her second career league honor after three-goal week
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College field hockey senior Emily McCoy has been named ACC Offensive Player of the Week after her performances in the Eagles' final two regular-season games.
The All-American midfielder from Lancaster, Pa., scored a team-best three goals last week in a pair of games against nationally-ranked opponents.
Â
On Thursday, McCoy tallied two goals to lead the Eagles to a 4-1 road win at No. 16 Harvard. It was her first multiple-goal game of the season and her first since September 2015. The victory snapped the Crimson's eight-game winning streak, and extended BC's own winning streak against Harvard to 12 games dating back to 2004.
Â
On Sunday, McCoy netted Boston College's second goal against No. 3 Connecticut, giving the Eagles a then 2-1 lead in a back-and-forth second half. It was the 34th goal of her career and moved her into a tie for 10th place on BC's career goals chart.
Â
This is McCoy's second ACC weekly honor of her career; she was also the ACC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28, 2014 during her sophomore season.
Â
Overall this year, Boston College has earned a program-record three ACC weekly awards. Junior Chelcie Mendonca was the ACC co-Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 20, and went on to capture NFHCA national defensive player of the week honors the next day. Sophomore center back Frederique Haverhals was tabbed ACC co-Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 11.
Â
This is the first time BC has won three league weekly honors in a season while a member of the ACC. Twice before BC has drawn two weekly honors from the conference: 2005 (Bob Dirks on Sept. 26 and Crystal Frates on Oct. 24) and 2014 (Eryn McCoy on Oct. 21 and Emily McCoy on Oct. 28).
Â
The 11th-ranked Eagles (10-8, 3-3 ACC) will next play in the 2016 ACC Championship later this week. The annual tournament will be hosted by Wake Forest at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. After a finishing with a 3-3 record in ACC play, Boston College drew its highest-ever seeding in the event and will start the tournament as the No. 3 seed.
Â
BC will face No. 6 seed – and seventh-ranked – Virginia (12-7, 3-3 ACC) in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3. The game will be televised live by regional sports networks – including NESNplus locally – and streamed on ACC Network Extra (WatchESPN), but is subject to blackout restrictions.
Â
The winner of the BC-Virginia quarterfinal will advance to face the winner of the Syracuse (No. 2 seed, No. 2 ranked)/Wake Forest (No. 7 seed, No. 19 ranked) quarterfinal in the semifinal round at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4.
