Boston College lost to Virginia Tech, 3-2, in double-overtime at the Newton Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. BC is now 10-4-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech is 10-4-1 and 2-3-1 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alani Johnson got Virginia Tech on the board first in the 28th minute of the match. Johnson shot was from eight yards out on a shot to the far post.
- The Eagles offense was silent in the first half but came alive in the second.
- BC scored in the 62nd minute when Olivia Vaughn was dropped in the box as she made a run up the sideline towards the goal. McKenzie Meehan stepped up and tied the match, 1-1.
- Just 28 seconds later, Jenna Bike was dropped in the box and BC was awarded another penalty kick. Freshman Samantha Hiatt scored on the second penalty kick and BC took a 2-1 lead.
- Virginia Tech scored with 10 minutes left in the match. Murielle Tiernan headed in a corner kick off the foot of Marie Johnston to tie the match, 2-2.
- The Hokies won the match in the final minute of the second overtime. Tiernan broke out on a long run up the sideline on a counter attack. Tiernan ripped a shot from 22 yards out to the far post for the win.
GAME NOTES
- BC outshot Virginia Tech in overtime, 7-2. Both teams finished with nine shots on goal apiece.
- The Eagles played the second overtime without senior McKenzie Meehan, who was injured at the end of the first overtime. Meehan led the offense with seven shots, four on goal. Meehan now has 10 goals this season. She has now notched double-figures in goals scored in three of her four years.
- Boston College had 11 corner kicks, while the Hokies had five.
- Freshman Samantha Hiatt, who started her 15th game of the season, scored her first career goal on a penalty kick in the second half. Hiatt now has one goal, four assists for six points as a defender.
UP NEXT
- Boston College will now go on a three-game ACC road trip. The Eagles will play at Wake Forest on Saturday October 15, followed by a game at Clemson on Oct. 20 and at UVA on Oct. 23.
