TURNING POINT
• Providence scored two goals within the last 30 seconds of the first period to grab a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission but the Eagles responded with a pair a minute apart to creep to within one heading into the third. Chris Calnan netted the equalizer at 3:43 to help the Eagles grab a league point on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED
An eventful first period yielded a 3-1 Providence lead after the opening 20 minutes, despite two Friar goals being called back.
Brandon Tanev crashed into Ian Milosz at 4:26 of the first but shoved the disc over the line in the process. The officials deemed it no goal and the Eagles took advantage of that break shortly after on a power play rip from Ian McCoshen.
Josh Monk was whistled for tripping at 5:35 and the Eagles worked the cycle at the top of the zone to take the early lead. Casey Fitzgerald shifted over to Austin Cangelosi on the near boards and hit McCoshen with the pass at the top of the left circle and he hammered it past Nick Ellis for the 1-0 lead at 7:07.
PC looked to score at 8:59 on a long effort by Garrett Gamez, but upon further review, the puck went in under the side of the net to keep PC off the board once again.
After two overturned goals, the Friars turned it on and tallied the next three goals. After a Chris Calnan hooking penalty at 10:17, Erik Foley went bardown at 10:58 on a one-timer from Tom Parisi to tie it up, 1-1, at 10:58 on the power play.
Just as the first frame was about to expire, Providence scored two goals in the last 30.8 seconds left. Nick Saracino took advantage of a scrum in front of Milosz's right and managed to backhand flip the puck to the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead at 19:29. On the ensuing exchange, John Gilmour duped Milosz with a shot from behind the net that back off the Eagle goaltender at 19:46 to take hold of the two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
Providence added its fourth of the night on a one-timer blast from Trevor Mingoia at 6:30 of the second period. Mark Jankowski provided Mingoia with the blast just above the right circle and the Friar forward rang it off the left pipe and in to make it 4-1.
Midway through the second, the Eagles responded with a relentless attack. Steve Santini triggered the scoring play with an initial attempt in the slot. Santini's shot banked off of Ellis where Ryan Fitzgerald corralled it and slipped it over the Teddy Doherty on the far post. Doherty put the puck past Ellis' left pad at 11:58 to cut the Friar lead by two, 4-2.
Doherty's goal came just after the official nailed Vincent Desharnais with a hooking call, so following the goal, Boston College immediately went to the power play and Tuch cashed in exactly a minute later at 12:58.
Adam Gilmour delivered a blast on net from the left circle and Tuch was able to gather the rebound and set it up to the point for Doherty. After Tuch's pass, he centered himself in front of Ellis and was able to redirect Doherty's attempt to the back of the net at 12:58 to make it a one-goal game heading into the third period.
Tuch's power play goal provided momentum for the Eagles heading into the third after Calnan blasted the equalizer past Ellis at 3:43 of the third period.
Santini cleared the puck out of BC's zone with a strong outlet pass to Cangelosi on the red line. With Calnan flying down the left side, Cangelosi touch passed it off to Calnan and he was off to the races with a Friar on his heels. In stride, Calnan wired it from the slot past Ellis to knot it up, 4-4, early in the third period.
Milosz continued to stand his ground down the stretch as neither team was able to break the standoff in regulation. The contest resulted in a tie after the Eagles managed one shot on net in the extra session while Providence posted two shots on Milosz.
