CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's hockey team was tabbed the team to beat as the Eagles earned the No. 1 preseason ranking according to the USCHO.com Division I men's poll unveiled on Monday afternoon.
The Eagles collected 19 first-place votes, joining a record nine other programs to receive at least one first-place vote. Boston College collected 907 total points, 31 ahead of second-ranked Minnesota-Duluth (836 – 12 first-place votes). Boston University rounded out the top three, notching six first-place votes and 820 points.
Providence, tabbed seventh overall, earned six first-place votes, while UMass Lowell grabbed a pair. The River Hawks are slotted No. 14 in the preseason poll. Minnesota State (sixth), Harvard (eighth), Minnesota (ninth) and Miami (11th) were the other programs to pick up first-place distinction.
"We are honored to be considered number one heading into the season," head coach Jerry York said. "I really like the depth of our team and we are extremely excited to get things underway."
Boston College finished No. 13 and No. 14, respectively, in the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine final polls upon conclusion of the 2014-15 season.
The last time Boston College was ranked No. 1 in the country was towards the end of the 2013-14 season when the Eagles ran off a 19-game unbeaten mark, winning 17 games and skating to a pair of draws over the course of the run. The 19-game unbeaten streak marked the second time BC has put together that type of run under York.
BC's preseason begins Saturday evening against the University of New Brunswick in an exhibition on Oct. 3. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
Boston College's 94th hockey season opens on the road in West Point when the Eagles take on Army on Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. BC will stay in the area and faceoff against Rensselaer on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
