Eagles claim championship in doubles, as well
BOSTON – Junior Lexi Borr claimed the Red Singles title at the Harvard Fall Classic on Sunday morning after she posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Harvard's Erica Oosterhout in the championship match.
Additionally, Boston College claimed the Singles A doubles title as well, although no formal winner was named. BC sent two entrants to the final – the team of Borr and Jackie Urbinati, as well as the tandem of Katya Vasilyev and Emily Safron. Instead of facing teammates for the title, the Eagles decided not to play the match.
"Lexi is playing at a very high level and had a great tournament," women's tennis coach Nigel Bentley said. Asiya (Dair) had a strong weekend. Jennifer (Ren) went 3-0, too, which is very encouraging. We played good doubles. Katya and Emily are working well together, and Jackie and Lexi were sharp. We made some mental mistakes and have to be more consistent, but it is very nice to win both singles and doubles titles at this Harvard event."
Outside of bracket play, other Eagles were in action. Ren posted her third win of the weekend with a 6-2, 2-1 (ret.) win over Boston University's Lauren Davis. Dair defeated Yale's Sherry Li, 6-2, 6-4, while Heini Salonen posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over BU's Kim McCallum.
In other action Sunday, Urbinati fell to Columbia's Alexandra Solovyev (6-2, 6-3), and Wan-Yi Sweeting suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Yale's Valerie Shklover.
BC's next action comes when Borr and Dair head to the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. That event, boasting some of the nation's top collegiate players, kicks off on Oct. 3 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
