Men's soccer faces Panthers at 7 p.m. in Newton
Match Notes
BC HOSTS PITT SATURDAY NIGHT
• Boston College will host Pittsburgh on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the first ACC contest in Newton in 2015.
• The two teams did not meet last season. The last time BC and Pitt met on the pitch was in 2013 with the Eagles taking a 2-1 comeback victory in Pennsylvania.
• BC owns a 10-4-2 record in the all-time series against the Panthers.
• The Eagles lost a 2-1 double overtime match in their ACC opener last weekend at NC State.
• Pittsburgh lost to #14 Wake Forest, 4-0, at home last weekend in its conference opener.
BC FALLS AT NC STATE
• NC State scored the equalizer in the 67th minute and then the game-winner in the 109th minute to complete a 2-1 double overtime comeback win last weekend in Raleigh.
• Freshman Trevor Davock tallied his second goal of the season to give BC a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
• Junior Zeiko Lewis assisted on the strike and it was his second helper of the year.
• Sophomore Cedric Saladin made five saves in goal.
• NC State controlled the pace for much of the first half and had a couple of quality chances. Caleb Duvernay sent a cross into the box 24 minutes into the match and Zach Knudson took a shot from point-blank range, but Saladin made the save.
• After the Wolfpack had a goal called back due to a foul, Yanni Hachem had a scoring chance with six minutes left after a nice chest pass from Ade Taiwo. Saladin was there again to thwart the attack.
• It was Boston College who converted on its first quality chance in the 52nd minute. Freshman Simon Enstrom sent a cross into the box from the left side. Davock redirected it towards goal and it was deflected right to Lewis, who passed it back to Davock for the goal.
• The Wolfpack equalized the match in the 67th minute after Duvernay sent a cross into the box. Philip Carmon got a head on it and then Taiwo finished it from close range to tie the game.
• In the first overtime period, Enstrom had the best scoring chance in the fourth minute when he handled the ball on the right side. He turned and fired at goal, but the NC State keeper made a nice save.
• NC State tallied the win in 109th minute when Blotko sent a low cross into the box from the right side. Duvernay was open by himself in the box and he found the back of the net to end the match.
LAST TIME VS. PITTSBURGH
• Boston College scored twice in the last 10 minutes to earn a 2-1 comeback win at Pittsburgh on September 14, 2013 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
• Atobra Ampadu scored his first career BC goal in the 80th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Giuliano Frano secured the game-winner with 1:05 left in the match to propel the Eagles to the victory.
• Frano assisted on Ampadu's goal and Zeiko Lewis helped on the game-winner.
• The first half was played evenly as BC held a slight advantage in shots, 6-5. Pitt converted on its only shot on goal in the half in the 13th minute. Ryan Myers sent a free kick into the box where it found Zane Meehan at the far post. He put it in to give the Panthers the early lead.
• Pitt goalkeeper Dan Lynd made three saves in the first 45 to retain the Panther lead.
• Boston College added more pressure in the second half and fired off 12 shots. Ampadu nearly scored the equalizer in the 77th minute but the post kept the ball out of the net, and then a save by Lynd on another Ampadu attempt kept BC scoreless.
• He did connect three minutes later though off a pass from Frano. Following the equalizing strike, Lewis fed Frano for the game-winning goal in the 89th minute.
• Lynd totaled seven saves for Pitt while Keady Segel made one for BC.
THE GREEN TEAM
• Boston College sports 12 freshmen on its 2015 roster, the most of any team in the ACC.
• North Carolina and Pittsburgh have 11 freshmen on their squads while NC State and Syracuse have 10.
• Through five games this season, eight of the 12 freshmen have seen time on the pitch.
• Freshman Simon Enstrom leads the team with three goals and seven points while classmate Trevor Davock has two goals and an assist.
• Freshman Joshua Forbes has also recorded an assist.
• Fifteen of BC's 25 points - 60 percent - have come from freshmen and sophomores.
ENSTROM EMERGES
• Freshman Simon Enstrom scored all seven of his points in two matches two weeks ago.
• He scored twice in Boston College's 3-2 win at Boston University on August 31. He scored in the 16th minute and notched the game-winner to break a 2-2 tie in the 80th minute.
• He then recorded a goal and an assist in the Eagles' 4-2 upset win over #23 SMU.
AMPADU'S TWO GOALS
• Senior Atobra Ampadu got his first start of the season against #23 SMU and made it count.
• He scored the Eagles' first two goals just 25 seconds apart to give BC a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute. It was his first two-goal game at Boston College.
• After the Mustangs scored the match's first goal in the 13th minute, Ampadu equalized the match 10 minutes later. He took a pass from freshman Simon Enstrom and sent a cross near the goal line from the right side. The keeper got to it, but deflected it into the back of his own net to make it 1-1.
• Just 25 seconds later, Ampadu had a brilliant strike from more than 30 yards away that beat the diving keeper to give BC a 2-1 lead.
LEWIS LEADS THE ATTACK
• Junior Zeiko Lewis has been a crucial part of the BC offense the last three seasons.
• As a freshman, he earned numerous honors including: NSCAA All-South Atlantic Second Team, ACC Freshman of the Year, All-ACC Second Team, All-ACC Freshman Team and Soccer America All-Freshman First Team.
• Lewis led the ACC in assists (11) and assists per game (0.61) and ranked 10th in the conference in points (17).
• He ranked third in the country in assists per game and fourth in assists.
• Last year, Lewis was an All-ACC Second Team player with three goals and three assists.
• This season, he has a goal and is tied for the team lead with two assists.
KELLY APPROACHING 300 WINS
• Head coach Ed Kelly has a career record of 294-215-60 in his 31st year of coaching collegiate soccer. His record at BC is 254-202-54 in his 28th season.
• Kelly would become the 19th active coach and the third in the ACC with 300 career coaching victories.
• He currently ranks 47th all-time in coaching wins with 294. His 295th would tie him for 45th with Bruce Arena (Virginia) and Julius Menendez (San Jose State).
