HIGHLIGHTS
Katty Workman tallied a game high 13 kills and Sol Calvete recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs to open up the 2015 New England Challenge Invitational in a 3-0 win over Northeastern Thursday night. The win is the fourth straight win at home for the Eagles, who remain undefeated in Power Gym this season, and the second straight win overall.
Set One:
In the first set of the evening, Calvete recorded three kills to lead the Eagles in the first frame. With the score tied at 10 apiece, Boston College began to take charge when they forced back-to-back attack errors from Northeastern. The Maroon and Gold went on an 11-5 run to bring the score to 21-15, and despite a late surge from the Huskies,Kam McLain was able to finish off the set with one of her four kills on the evening.
Set Two:
The Eagles jumped out an early lead in the second set as they scored eight of the first 11 points in the set, forcing Northeastern to call a timeout. The break didn't stop the BC offense as they continued to bring difficulty to the Huskies defense, going on an 11-4 run to extend the lead to 19-12 in favor of the home team and once again, forcing Northeastern to call timeout. Camille Oemcke, Workman and Topor each contributed with a kill before Calvete closed the door on the second set with two straight kills. Boston College took the second set by a score of 25-15.
Set Three:
Following the 10 minute break between sets, the Eagles continued to dominate on the court as they quickly jumped out to an early 10-5 lead behind three Workman kills and a stout defense that forced five Northeastern errors in that period. The two teams exchanged points for the next several points, but the icing on the cake came when the Eagles led 17-10. Workman tallied a kill then helped in forcing two attack errors to extend the lead to 20-10. BC closed the set on a 5-2 run to finish victorious in front of the home crowd.
COACH QUOTES:
"I was quite happy that we got distinctly better in different parts of the game and in each set. I wasn't terribly happy with the way we started. That kind of start isn't going to get us far in the ACC, but to their credit, the girls rallied and improved their play as the match went on, which is what we are always trying to do."
