CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's volleyball team kick off their 2015 season when they host the seventh annual Boston College Invitational the weekend of August 28-29 at the Power Gym on the Chestnut Hill campus.
The four-team tournament will feature Providence, Sacred Heart, South Alabama and the host Eagles, who are each slated to play three games over the two-day tournament. The BC Invite features schools from four conferences, including the Northeast, Big East, Sun Belt and the ACC.
The tournament kicks off at 4:30 p.m. when the Friars of Providence and the Sacred Heart Pioneers make their season debuts in the tournament opener. In the night cap matchup, the Eagles will host the South Alabama Jaguars in what will be the first meeting between the two teams in school history. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Four matches are on tap for the second day of the Boston College Invitational as the Maroon and Gold host Providence in the first match, set for 11 a.m. in the Power Gym. Matches between Sacred Heart and South Alabama (1 p.m.) and Providence and South Alabama (4:30 p.m.) fill the afternoon slate before the tournament closes out with the days fourth match between Sacred Heart and Boston College.
While the Eagles will face South Alabama for the first time in program history in the 2015 Boston College Invitational, they are quite familiar with both Sacred Heart and Providence as they have a combined 27 matchups between the two schools. The Eagles are 5-0 all-time against Sacred Heart while they hold a 7-15 record against Providence, dating back to 1990 when the two schools were Big East rivals.
For Chris Campbell's squad, who return 10 letter winners from a 2014 team that went 6-12 in conference play, their most conference wins since 2007 and the most during Campbell's tenure, the BC Invitational is the first of four tournaments the Eagles will play in prior to the start of the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule, which begins on September 25, when the Eagles travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on the Orange.
On hosting the tournament, Campbell said, "You always want to start off strong and develop some momentum out of the gate. You need to have talented players and you need to have a group who is cohesive. Opening up at home in the first tournament [allows us] to establish that cohesion and obviously trying to get some wins and to play well. [The BC Invitational] is very important because it sets the tone for the group dynamic for the rest of the season."
